Tilia monticola is a large tree with a dense crown growing 15-20 m tall. The crown is oval at a young age, but will later become broadly oval. The annual branches are a striking red colour, especially on the sunny side. The grey bark is slightly grooved. The large leaves are ovate to broadly ovate and hang down ever so slightly. On the upper side, the leaves are a glossy dark green. The underside is densely felted greyish-white, never brownish-white. When moved by the wind, the light undersides of the leaves create a sparkling effect. Flowers appear in July in pendulous corymbs with up to 10 flowers together. The individual flowers are about 1 cm in size. They are followed by egg-shaped, felty brown haired fruits.
Naturally, T. monticola grows in mountainous regions in the US states of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Some taxonomists consider T. monticola to be synonymous with T. americana, the typical characteristics being considered "falling within natural variation". It is also closely related to T. heterophylla, which in turn is also sometimes considered a variety of T. americana.
Tilia monticola grows in any permeable soil and is suitable for use in wide avenues, as a park tree or in gardens. Does not tolerate paving.

Správny čas na výsadbu stromu je mimo vegetačné obdobie. V strednej Európe môže byť Tilia monticola so zemným balom vysadený od polovice novembra do konca apríla, avšak závisí to veľmi od klimatických podmienok a druhu stromu.
