'New Madrid' is moderately strong-growing tree that grows about 15 m tall. The tree forms a straight, continuous heart branch with more or less horizontal branching. The crown is broadly conical, later almost round. The leaves are ovate to elliptical and deeply lobed. The tips of the lobes are pointed, as in Q. coccinea and Q. palustris. The young leaves are deep purple when unfurling. In summer it is a glossy dark green and only in late autumn it turns intense deep red to purple, before it falls off. Like Q. texana, 'New Madrid' is also a tree that grows in any soil type, as long as it is nutrient-rich. The tree tolerates wet soil.
'New Madrid' was selected as a seedling by Guy Sternberg, an authority on oaks from Petersburg, Illinois, USA. Hardiness zone 6.
