'Charneux' is a moderately strong-growing pear tree with a narrow pyramidal to pyramidal, semi-open crown of 4-8 m in height. The stem branches grow steeply upwards. The tree flowers around the end of April and early May with white blossom, often followed by many afterflowers in May and early June. 'Charneux' is not self-pollinating, which means that a tree of another pear variety must be nearby for good fruiting. Preferably, 'Clapp's Favourite', 'Conference' or 'Doyenné du Comice' is used for this purpose. 'Charneux' pears are quite large and have a pale green, later greenish-yellow skin. The flesh is soft, juicy and aromatic, but the flavour is somewhat bland. The pears are ready for picking in the second half of September. It is a hand pear that can be stored for up to several months. The pears are only suitable for direct consumption and not for processing.
'Charneux' was found around 1800 by the Belgian grower M. Légipont from Charneux near Liège and is also known by the name Légipont. Hardiness zone 5b.
