Pinus flexilis is a medium-sized tree (10 - 15 m) native to western and southwestern North America. The young twigs are very pliant, to which the species name also refers. The needles are always arranged together in bundles of five needles. The needles are up to 10 cm long and dark green to greenish blue. Also in 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid', the needles are dark blue-green. More striking about this cultivar is its growth habit. Despite the branching of the side branches being quite horizontal, this cultivar grows up narrowly pyramidal. Eventually, 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid' grows from a shrub form into a small tree about 10 m tall. The tree is densely branched, giving a compact impression. Was introduced in 1972 by J. Vermeulen & Sons Nursery, Neshanic Station, New Jersey, USA and is named after the employee who discovered the plant, Rein Vanderwolf. Hardiness zone: 5a
