'James Grieve' is a medium-sized apple tree that grows moderately fast. The crown is semi-open and broadly oval to round in shape. The tree will grow (5)6-8 m tall. Around late April-early May, white-pink flowers open from darker pink buds. The apples are ready for picking from mid-August. They are regularly rounded in shape, medium-sized and yellow-green with red stripes or a red blush. The flesh is yellowish-white, very juicy and pleasantly aromatic. The apple has a characteristic sweet taste. James Grieve' is a hand apple that keeps poorly. Its flesh is very susceptible to bruising. This cultivar is therefore not recommended for professional apple production, but it is an excellent apple for hobbyists and individuals. 'James Grieve' is very suitable for direct consumption and for making purée. That makes this cultivar fine for application in private gardens.
'James Grieve' was found in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1893 and named after its finder. Hardiness zone 6.
