Lindera benzoin is a large shrub with a round crown formed by dense branching with thin twigs and branches. The annual twigs are greenish, while the old, slightly furrowed bark is brownish-grey. The rather narrow leaves are bright green and turn an intense golden yellow in autumn. Both twigs and leaves are highly aromatic when damaged. The flowers open before the leaves emerge. This makes a flowering Lindera benzoin somewhat similar to Cornus mas, which, incidentally, is much coarser and flowers more yellowish. L. benzoin has unisexual flowers, which appear on separate male and female plants. As a result, the fruits are often not visible. Firstly, they are hidden under the leaves; secondly, female flowers must also be pollinated by male ones. It is a plant that grows naturally in moist, woody areas along forest edges. Any soil will do, as long as it is moist enough, but well-drained. Can grow in both full sun and light shade.

Správny čas na výsadbu stromu je mimo vegetačné obdobie. V strednej Európe môže byť Lindera benzoin so zemným balom vysadený od polovice novembra do konca apríla, avšak závisí to veľmi od klimatických podmienok a druhu stromu.
