Larix decidua 'Pendula' is a small to medium-sized tree growing 6 to 8 m tall, with a very distinctive appearance. It forms a slightly sinuous continuous central branch with strongly drooping side branches and twigs. As a result, the crown is irregular, capricious and open. On the longer twigs, the needles are scattered, on short twigs they are in bundles. This position of the needles is typical of Larix. The needles are dark green and turn golden yellow in autumn before falling off. 'Pendula' is best used on slightly alkaline soils. Does not tolerate paving, so is especially suitable as a solitary in gardens, parks, cemeteries, etc. It is well wind resistant and very hardy. 'Pendula' was named as early as 1836, but clones of L. decidua with drooping branches may have been grown as early as the 18th century. Over the course of history, several clones under the name 'Pendula' have entered the market. Some of these do not form a continuous heart branch and need to be grafted onto a (high) trunk.
