'Royal Purple' usually forms a substantial shrub, but sometimes grows into a small tree 3-5 m tall. The crown is round but will grow wider than it is tall in later life. Unlike the species C. coggygria, the smooth twigs are black-purple. The old bark is light brown and smooth. The ovoid to oblong-ovate leaves are black-purple when unfurling and then turn deep purple-red in the summer months. In autumn, the leaves turn from pale orange to deep red. For deeper leaf colours and better autumn colours, 'Royal Purple' is best planted in full sun. Large, cloudy flower panicles appear in the summer months. The actual flowers are small and inconspicuous; it is mainly the flower stalks that give the panicles shape and structure. The panicles are lilac-green to light purple. The small fruits are not very conspicuous either, but as the stems are more intensely coloured, the panicles gain even more ornamental value, especially when combined with the dark foliage.
Suitable for application to nutrient-rich, sufficiently moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates temporary drought. Applicable in parks, gardens, cemeteries, amusement parks, etc. Both as solitary and in plant groups.
