A densely branched, spherical shrub, that when grafted on stock (C. bignonioides), can grow into a small, flat-topped, spherical tree. Depending on the graft union the height will be 2 - 2.5 m. The crown becomes circa 6 - 7 m wide. It is a slow growing tree. The grey brown, shallow fissured bark peels in plates and the hard wood of the twigs breaks easily. The acuminate and entire, heart-shaped leaf appears late in spring and is shed relatively early. It is considerably smaller and narrower than the species. When bruised a distinct smell is emitted. In autumn it turns yellow. Shallow rooting with fleshy roots. The tree can be pruned vigorously every few years to encourage the crown. Widely applied in small gardens, on squares and round-abouts.

Správny čas na výsadbu stromu je mimo vegetačné obdobie. V strednej Európe môže byť Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' so zemným balom vysadený od polovice novembra do konca apríla, avšak závisí to veľmi od klimatických podmienok a druhu stromu.
